Advance Wars: Days of Ruin

Anyone else into this series? This one got a major upgrade. Plus wifi play.

Picked it up this morning and already played a couple wifi games with it.

Anyone else try it?

I've put like 100+ hours into Advance Wars: DS, so this one is very interesting. I've heard, though, that sometimes the game is more of a puzzle game than a strategy game in that there's really only 1 or 2 ways to actually win a battle.

Regardless, I need to get it. I'll put up my friend code or whatever when I do and we can play online (if they even have that?). I typically play when I'm bored at work.

Yeah it has online. I've played a couple games. I dunno about the puzzle stuff. I haven't seen any of that but I'm onnly on the 4th campaign mission. Story and graphics are much better and the bikes are cool.

Got it yesterday and played the first two maps. Not bad. I dig the new look. Supposedly they were going for "gritty" but it just looks a little less cartoony that it used to. Using the color gray on everything doesn't exactly make it gritty.

I really like how they use both screens for the combat scenes. Why didn't they do that for Dual Strike? Or did they...?

So I got the game - I've played a couple hours of the campaign mode.

The new units are interesting - I really like the bike - it's essentially a super-mobile infantry unit. It makes conquering larger maps a lot easier. The story isn't as cheesy as Advance Wars: DS, but it's just as irrelevant.

They changed the controls a bit and I dislike it. I typically play the game with a stylus-only, and a lot of things I used to do in the previous version I can't do in this - for example, I liked to select a unit, select a path and then see the options available to me and the % of damage it was likely to do if it was attacking. On the other version, clicking anywhere on the screen cancels the action, in this version, you need to hit B or click on the "cancel" box, which is annoying.

I'm not a big fan of the new graphics, either - in particular the new landscapes and maps.

Those small things aside, it's still the best portable turn-based strategy game around and it will definitely replace Advance Wars: DS from here on out.

Edit: : DS were smileys...

I was going to buy it in gamestop yesterday but the guys working there were dicks so I'm going to buy it somewhere else.

If I'm new to the series should I start with this one or one of the other versions?

I like Dual Strike better.

If you need the online play, go with Days of Ruin, but if not, Dual Strike has a ton more features and feels a lot cleaner.

Might as well start with the first one on the GBA. Dual Strike didn't really add anything substantial, so if you can find one of the GBA versions you can spend less money before you know how much you'll like the series.

The online play just makes this one worth all the others combined. I do agree the last one had more unlockables and stuff though. I like the story on this one more even though that's never been the series highlight.

I'm bumping the crap out of this thread because I just got S-ranks in all of the campaign missions (64 total, I think).

I want to get every medal but I hate the fact that some are for playing online multiplayer matches.

Also, I'm not sure who's idea it was to give medals for obtaining B and C-class ranks, but rewarding people for sucking is ridiculous. I'm not about to barely beat 50 missions just to get 50 C-class ratings.

That said, I think I've grown used to Days of Ruin and maybe even prefer it over Dual Strike.

This is my first DS game ever, and I'm enjoying it immensely. I have never played any of the previous versions.

I do find it pretty difficult though. I've finished all the main campaign missions except for the last one, and done a lot of the optionals.

I really hate the fog of war maps.

How the heck did you get "S" in all of them?!?!

Fog of war maps are alright - they're much easier once you master using them to your advantage (hide in forests/cities, know the vision of each unit). I just get a bit annoyed when the CPU makes a questionable move seemingly knowing where my guys are hidden.

I got A and S-ranks through my main play through - maybe a B or two. I've read a lot of people recommend winning this game by simply out-producing your enemy. I'm not really a fan of that and it actually hurts your score - instead of making a ton of regular tanks, I prefer a couple medium/heavy tanks and ranged units.

I've found the best way to win (and get a high rank), is to beat your opponent with as few attacks as possible. It takes 2 attacks to kill an anti-air with a regular tank, whereas you can kill it in one attack with a heavy tank. So when funds are low, instead of building a tank - just don't build anything and save up for the bigger guys. I've always heard people say you shouldn't go a turn without building something, but I rarely do that unless I have advanced enough on the CPU such that I just need a consistent push to finish them off.

The last 3 missions were the hardest to get S ranks on, and I squeaked by on "The Great Owl" with like 301 points.

I just went back and played Dual Strike for a bit, and I definitely prefer Days of Ruin over it now.
