<==ADSL tweaking for speed==>

I just switched to ADSL over the weekend from a 33.6 modem.
It seems surfing has only slightly sped up where downloads obviously have. Some sites, that would before, wouldn't even load! In fact, I switched back to my ol' 33.6 to see if the site was down, but it loaded perfectly, and 10 minutes of surfing later I had forgotten I wasn't using ADSL!
I'm running Win95 on a P-233MMX, AsusTX97, 64MB-SDRAM, 2MB-AWE64.
I'm wondering if I'm aware of all the possible bottlenecks that I can control. What impact would guys say the following factors have?
  • Operating System
  • Tweaking the OS/Software
  • The Hardware
Am I missing anything?
Thing is, I'm on the verge of upgrading (Duron600, A7V, GeforceMX) and I can probably get a hold of any OS. I don't think I can upgrade until the newyear($), but I'll see.
Should I switch to SE? ME? Tweak 95? Sit on thumbs till upgrade? Thanks in advance.

The speedguide tweaks are good.

If you did any tweaking for your 33.6 modem in the registry, those setting will still be there.

What is your ADSL speed, er what package did you get and what does computing central tell you your spped is? You could also do the spped and tweak checks at DslReports and see what spped you are testing at. The tweak test will show you what your cuurent rwin, etc. values are.

But will all the tweaking I can do make up for the limits of my OS or a slow computer?
I have visited all of these sites (good as they are) and I think I will run through DSLReport's tweak test/fix. Will it make as much of a difference as a new OS or computer? I just want to know how much farther it will take me if I make changes to the other factors aforementioned.
Basically, I can't find any info describing the bottlenecks of a connection, what they are, and how they weigh.

thx,

UPDATE

ADSL just became the coolest thing to happen to my computer in years.

I ran an RWIN patch against my registry and my speed has gone from 3x to 6x faster than before.
I was getting 20, usually 35-45KB/s.

I just downloaded a 5MB file @ 133KB/s! I got a ping @ 151KB/s!

For a phone line, I'd say that's freakin' fast!

Thanks for the help. Long live Anandtech!
