Thanks for all the input on my last couple of questions all. We got our ADSL hookup yesterday. We're getting about 56-120 kilobytes per second. Can anyone explain to me this: Advertising on the bellsouth.net site said it'd be 1.5 megabytes per second. Now, when someone says 1.5 megabytes per second I think in my head, call me wacky, of the contents of a floppy (1.44 mb) coming at me each second. Actually, I figured we'd be getting about 1/2 that most of the time... say 760 kilobytes per second. So why the MUCH lower range?

it's 1.5 Mbps, which is 1.5 megabits per second. there are 8 bits in a byte. so the contents of a floppy would take around 8 seconds to get through

Like mday said, the bellsouth literature said bits, not bytes. One day maybe, but not anytime real soon, at least for residential broadband. 120KB is just about right.

?!@#!#@! I swear, talk about a tricky bit of symantics. Cheap trick, I'd bet 1/2 their subscribers don't know the difference between bits and bytes. Turkeys. Thanks for the enlightenment.

It's not BellSouth responsiblity to explain the difference between bits and bytes to you or anybody else. Did they tell you that you were getting a 1.5 MegaBYTE connection. Doubt it but if they did, you have a case. Besides that, you probably had a 56 KiloBIT connection before you got your aDSL connection, if that. What in the world are you complaing about. A freaking T1 that costs 1000 bucks a month or more in some instances and provides the same downstream 1.5 Megabits per second that you now have. Enjoy the speed you have.
