I just installed my Brothers ADSL for him,but having some problems that don't seem right.

The internet and mail runs fine.but when trying to connect to Morpheus,it does not connect at all.
and Counter-Strike won't connect either.

when i click on play online game in CS,it will keep retrying, and retrying to bring up servers.
but always says times out,or can't connect to Won Servers.

Also had a problem with ICQ registering,or connecting.
i somehow got ICQ working by changing the settings in ICQ to firewall.
and there is no firewall even installed on his Comp.
its a new built comp, with ADSL freshly installed today.

Specs:

Ameritech ISP
USB SpeedTouch DSL Modem
Win98SE

Problem solved: Appears it had something to do with the User name/Password to log onto to DSL.the one they sent me was more of a test type connection i guess.i decided to registry a different name and try it and it worked fine.
After i talked to them and they tried to register my name for 3 HOURS.

Listen to This: I asked 2 of the people i talked to if i was supposed to add "@ameritech.net" to my user name.they both said no.just add your username and thats it.
So,3 hours later i called again (about the 7th time today) and talked to a lady that told me i HAD to have the "@AMERITECH.NET" at the end of my username.and BOOM,it was working fine.
Morhpeus,ICQ,CS and everything else is fine now.

The Tech support for this ISP is a joke.

If anyone has any idea on how to get atleast Morpheus, and Counter-Strike working i would appreciate it.

He ain't had a the internet,or a computer in about a year or so.i built him this one for christmas and would like to get it working for him.

Thanks for any help.

could be as simple as a configuration problem on your end (like uninstalling the TCP/IP stack or renaming your computer) or it could be some sort of firewall on your ISP - call them up see what they got running (even though I doubt this one)

I've tried to get ahold of tech support 3 times.

Basically all they said was,as long as you can browse and get email, they can't help me.

i tried to explain to them what the problem was,and she didn't have a clue what i was talking about.
didn't even know what ICQ or AIM was to boot.
told me to call the program, and or game company and have them help me.

that sorta sucked i thought.

As far as reinstalling TCP/IP,should i uninstall the PPPOE deal as well?
Just not use to this USB Modem crap.

and the connection is ran straight.no LAN,Hub,Router etc.

Thanks for any help.

It sounds like a firewall problem to me. Does that computer have Zone Alarm or Tiny Personal Firewall installed? Does the DSL modem have it's own firewall software? Check its configuration if you can access it in any way or bug your ISP's tech support again and try to find someone who has a clue. ;)

If you can ping out, get email, browse the web but can't do certain other things it's likely that the traffic is being blocked somewhere. As a test you could try bringing that computer to your place or wherever that has known good net access. You could also bring in another computer to your brother's DSL connection and try it there. By doing both those things you could pinpoint whether your problem was in the computer, DSL modem, or both.
