ADSL: Phone line extension, or DSL line extension?

My PC is upstairs, and my only phone socket is downstairs. I receievd my modem today with it's cables and stuff. The ADSL cable is not long enough to reach the phone socket downstairs.

In the shop there is a telephone line extension cable, and a ADSL extension cable.

Which is best for me to buy?

First off what are you reffering to as the "ADSL" cable. Because the only thing you use to hook up your DSL modem is a normal run of the mill phone cord and then some Cat-5 going from the modem to your computer/router/whatever you want to hook up to it.

Yeah, all the modems I've seen tend to just use normal phone cables.

Just take the cable that comes with the modem into the shop and make sure the jacks are the same as whatever you buy.

Only differences I can think of might be some kind of sheilding or something.

But then I could be completely wrong.

I'm betting that the label ADSL cable is for people who aren't sure what to buy. Its probably identical to normal phone cable and is mostly a marketing gimmick. I use normal phone wire with my DSL modem all the time.

BTW, a better solution would be to mount the DSL modem near your downstairs phone socket, put a router next to it and run ethernet/network cat5 cable upstairs to your network card directly. Why? Because network cables are often much better at carrying a signal so it doesn't degrade. And you can then share several computers from the router which usually has a built in 4 port switch. And because everyone needs a router anyway to protect them from the internet hackers.
