Can I use any type of ADSL MODEMs for the ADSL Connection? Are all the ADSL MODEMs the same? What I mean is that they can be used for any ISP ADSL Connection?

There are different types. CAP and DMT being the most common flavor used. Also, you need one that supports PPPoE or PPPoA if your ISP uses either of those.

You have to match what your ISP/telco supports.

From what I understand there are a lot of different kinds of DSL, probably all requiring different kinds of modems. Find out what kind of DSL modems other customers of your ISP are using.

I was told by BT & Tiscali, that as long as you have a line that has been activated for ADSL, and login details, that you could use any ADSL modem/router.

Most ADSL is DMT or actually G lite, most good modems can be configured either through telnet, browser or software utility. Of course you need to know what the configurable settings are.

I had a Northpoint modem that I re-configured to work with Earthlink/Covad DSL.

in UK i think you can use about any modem for any isp - for ASDL. At worst email your intended ISP.
