I just got adsl put on and i was just wondering.
If there is any way to setup windows xp, so that it will only logon to a network if and when I want to get to the internet, not when i turn on the computer? So it does not logon when I turn the computer on as it takes for ever to boot up now. I only have a 300meg download limit at the moment.

You have to explain a little more the way you are connected, and what DSL hardware is installed in your system.

Under most situation that should not be a problem.

If you have External Ethernet DSL Modem, you can get a Router, and keep the DSL initiation out of the computer.

Usb Ethernet connection with External DSL Modem. The main problem is that it logs on to a networke at boot up all the time. I was looking for a setting in xp like in 98 where it will only look for a network when you need it.

Win XP (home, and Pro)/

Option one, disconnecting from the whole Network:

Control Panel, Network connection, right click on Local Area connection, and open the properties.

Down to the left check the box that says? Show icon in notification area when connected.

Once you check it you will have small connection icon in the tray bar, right click on the icon, and you can disable your network connection. To enable you have to go again to the properties, and enable.

Option 2: Disconnecting TCP/IP only.

Make two small batch files that include one line:

First file:

ipconfig /release

Call the file IPrelease.bat. Put a short cut in a place of you choice.

Second file:

ipconfig /renew

Call the file IPrenew.bat. Put a short cut in a place of you choice.

In both shortcut's properties choose run minimize, and Close & Exit

>>>Make two small batch files <<<

Once you make them, and put two shortcuts on the Desktop, every one who can click a mouse can use them, or ignore them.

I did that they work when win xp pro is up and running. But i still have the problem of the boot up. It fully boots up but just before it lets you have control. It logons to the network no matter what i do and it just seems to slow that last couple of seconds of boot up down to about 2 minutes. Which is a real pain if you want to use the computer and not the adsl.

Why is it trying to connect in the first place? Is there something in Startup that makes it connect? Look at Start/All Programs/Startup. If there is something there, then taking it out of Startup would presumably solve the problem (you could put it on your desktop and click it when you really needed it.)

It is also possible that something else is trying to connect to the internet. I remember it used to drive me crazy when my modem dialup program kept on popping up when I didn't want it to. (Come to think of it, that was a week or two ago -- never did figure out why, so I just uninstalled the software. I can always reinstall if I really need to, e.g. DSL is dead for some reason). For example, I remember way back when I used to have this program to set the PC's clock that was always trying to connect, so I had to change its settings. Just guessing, another possibility might be if your computer is trying to check email at bootup, or if you've got some sort of file sharing program. Maybe stuff like Bonzi Buddy or Kazaa is triggering it -- you have not interactively requested a connection, but some program you've installed is.

If you can't find any obvious suspects, double-check your installation options. Maybe you told it to automatically connect. I remember, back before I got a router, I was using a dedicated PC server, and I had it configured to automatically connect at bootup to the internet. (The program was called Enternet maybe?) But, it could have been configured otherwise. You might try uninstalling and reinstalling the DSL software to see if there is an option somewhere to auto-connect at bootup.

If all else fails, uninstall your dsl software, get a cheap router, and let it make the dsl connection for you.

not familiar with xp pro using a ADSL connection.. it has a program integrated to work something like Enternet for PPPOE Adsl? as i recall, Enternet had a checkbox if you wanted to startup on bootup.. you can try RASPPPOE. it's freeware. i dont think Enternet is. page hasnt been updated in awhile, but worth a try.
