I have been using AdSubtract for a long time and it has worked well with the exception that temporariliy disabling it does not always allow every filter to be bypassed even after reloading a page. Also, it relies upon a database for blocking ads (much like the Windows hosts file) and it does not seem to be updated much since Intermute was aquired by Trend Micro. Finally, it does not properly block flash.

So, I poked around for a replacement and found Ads Filter, a plugin for IE. While it only does what it is named for (not all that AdSubtract does), it seems to do it well with good integration and easy to use name/wildcard-based filters -neither requiring a local proxy nor or database also maintains page-loading performance and never needs to be disabled (although it easily can be). The other stuff, particularly cleaning, can be handled by others such as CCleaner and appropriate IE settings (currently taking care of flash by simply disabling the add-on/plugin).

The earlier version I am using is free (current version is not so I have not tried it). So my questions is whether such programs are completely trust worthy and are there any similar but free alternatives?
