Adobe Type Manager

Can somebody tell me the advantages of using Adobe Type Manager 4.1 in Windows 2000?

I have the software (legit) installed on the laptop, and have recently reinstalled my desktop. I do not want to reinstall any software that would be less than useful, and I am not sure that the Windows Fonts does not do what ATM does.

I would ask Adobe, on their forums, but that would be like asking GM why I should not drive a Ford.

Appreciate any solid information.

Thanks,

Steve Sohn:confused:

Basically all ATM does is Manage your installed fonts.

It allows you to create groups of fonts that you can activiate and de-activate
at anytime, something that Windows lacks.

Used to be that having a lot of Fonts installed really bogged the system down.
With the advent of MUCHO RAM, it really isn't much of a factor any longer.

Thanks for the reply, but another question or seven ...

I installed ATM, but if Control Panel still has the FONTS folder, how can you deactivate fonts?

Are there certain fonts that HAVE to be in the WINNT Fonts Folder to run stuff, while the others are moved to the ATM folder and deleted from the WINNT Fonts? If so, do you know where there is documentation on this?

Many thanks.

A nifty trick to avoid using a manager or having them all on the system is to simply open the font you want to use in explorer; doing so makes it available to your programs.

After a pleasant little chat with Adobe, I will put here the basics of what we discussed.

Before installing ATM4.1, one should remove from the Fonts Folder (C:\WINNT\Fonts) those fonts not specified in <http://typedriverssupport.adobe.com/adobeknowbase/root/public/pm1010.htm?DREID=5645> which Windows loads as required.

Putting the other fonts in a safe folder somewhere, you install ATM, then reinstall the "non-essential" fonts from the folder they are in. You cannot control the required fonts, but you can sort and control the others.

Thanks, all.Text

One of the main reasons is that there is a limit as to how many font's windows will let you load. with ATM you can install more than the windows limit.
