I am just on the verge of setting up a Hackintosh. Luckily the hd i ordered came in sounding like marbles were jostling around inside the drive which gave me this opportunity to ask a simple question. Here are the cliff notes

- already bought Mac OS X 10.5.6 & Final Cut Express
- have 99% of the parts I need to build a compatible Hackintosh machine

Options:
1. keep on with the hackintosh build
2. take back the Mac OS & FCE and save 300$ then send back the drive and save another 220$ and just buy the full version of Premiere Pro
a. I kinda like this idea because Premiere Pro natively works with AVCHD files and is 64bit + my version of vista is 64bit (so in total that's 520$ i can re-allocate to PP4.1)
3. (most expensive) keep the hackintosh with the Mac OS & FCE and use PP4.1 also

The question that is burning me is between PP4.1 & Final Cut.

Will Premiere Pro run as fast on Mac OS X being 32bit or will it run better on Windows 64bit where I'd loose the option of fooling with Final Cut?

Did I ask that right!?!?!

Thanks for your help :)

I'd opt for Premiere Pro on Vista. A hackintosh is fun and all, but the little quirks are a headache and can be the source of the most random problematic things. It's basically a gamble when anything needs to update on the OS end too.

If you're OK with that, run with it. Otherwise, just stick to the Vista box.

Whats better about running Premiere Pro CS4/4.1 on a Mac?

nothing really, it's the same program. people who tout Mac is "better" for video editing are really saying... final cut pro is kick ass. and secondly, they prefer OS X.

It seems fairly common, but my wallet tells me it ain't worth it because I'm not doing it professionally. my heart lies in stills anyway =)

From what I have seen if final cut pro, there is nothing there that Premiere can't do.

So should I stick with my Q9650 running stock for AVCHD editing & encoding or should I build an i7 to do the same (stock) out of the $$$ from selling off teh 775lga platform:

Q9650 (always under h20 cooling) , UD3R, 4Gb DDR2 1000

EDIT: just picked up a D0 199$ i7 920 unopened which is why im debating, thanks

I spend roughly 15 hours a week editing HD video. Nothing professional, I volunteer my time to edit, clean up, and post HD video for our church and my kids' school.

Final Cut is GREAT. But if you're building a new Mac from scratch to use it, that's not a smart decision. If you're already a heavy Mac user and had to choose between Premiere and FC, I'd recommend FC. It looks like you're sticking with a Windows based solution which is the right move since you have some nice rigs already.

You haven't stated what type of video editing you planned to do. Premiere Pro is great, but it's a ginormous program. Unless you're a heavy heavy user of After Effects (which seams perfectly with Premiere, as it should), I'd recommend Vegas Pro 9 instead. It even has a 64bit version.

You were originally comparing FC EXPRESS vs Premiere PRO. This is a bad comparison. It's consumer vs prosumer. Better comparison would be FCE vs Premiere ELEMENTS or FCPRO vs Premiere PRO.

I use 3 programs depending on the complexity of the project. Premiere Elements 7 -> Vegas Pro 9 -> Premiere Pro. I probably use Vegas Pro the most, because it's so fast and easy to get things done, even complicated stuff. I only use PP when I know I'll be using AE a lot. As you probably know, video editing is very tedious and time consuming. You want a program that can do what you want, at the quality level you want, as fast as possible.

Your Q9650 is fine for HD editing. I use a Q6600. An i7 will definitely speed up your renders. Whether it's worth the extra cost is up to you.

Thank you California Roll for a great response!

I already bought Premiere Pro CS4 for a good price @ B&H I didn't do any research on Vegas Pro. The one thing I like with PP4.1 is it natively supports AVCHD and a bunch of other good formats as well.

I am an ameture videographer that likes lots of options for final output files. I'm gonna learn PP CS4 and have some fun with it :)

The hard part over the decision is letting go an already great system. I love the Q9650 on the UD3 board. I've ran that at 500fsb x 8 multiplier on my Q9650 and it was solid as a rock. I've heard the i7 is good but not that much better which I still need to hear more opinions about within my needs, not just gaming. If I decide to keep rockin with the 775lga I can easily sell this i7 D0 off and get my $$$ back. What I am looking into now is whether or not to go with a server mobo for this cpu... see if the rest is under "too much" to build. All I need is a mobo and RAM....

If you've already purchased CS4, definitely go with that and learn it. It's extreme overkill if you're editing short home movie type clips, but once you learn it you can do almost anything with it. For complex video edit projects I use CS4 + Magic Bullet Looks + After Effects.
