Installing Photoshop works fine. But when I try to load it up I get an illeagle operation error. This happens with both version 5 and 6. I wasn't sure what the problem was so I installed it on my mom's comp and it worked on her's. I got so frusterated that I did a complete reformat and installed it again. I get the exact same thing! I had photoshop 5 on a long long time ago but since then quite a few things have changed on my comp. It's an AMD KT133 system. ABIT KT7 RAID in fact. I have all the newest drivers installed. Does anyone know what the problem might be? I heard it might be something in the registry but I think that reformatting would have cleared up that problem.

What exactly does the error say? What OS are you running, how much RAM? You did purchase this and it's not warez, right?

The weird thing is that it used to work. I just recently got photoshop 6 and I went back to 5 and got the same problem. But, 5 used to work well for me. It is obviously not a problem with the software itself because it works on other computers.

wow, this is a strange one... what components do you have in the system? you tried stripping it down to just the GFX card?

I have a TNT2 Ultra. I've tried the det 2 drivers, 5.30 and det 3, 6.5 I am thinking of removing the drivers and just using the basic ones and see what happens.

Could be that you've got a funky font on your system. Try moving them all to a temp folder and see if Photoshop will start. If it does, then you will want to start moving the fonts back a few at a time until you get the error again. If that works, get rid of the offending font.

Hope this works.........

I just tried running it from the other networked computer. By going into network neighbourhood, looking through the files, opening the .exe and guess what? It worked. It took a while to load but it still worked. Something is very weird here.

prolly something wrong with some windows software (big surprise there...). Is the system clean or have you installed/uninstalled a bunch of stuff lately? If it's not hardware related, which it may or may not I don't know, then registries and such may be to blame.

I had couple similar problems with the computers at work in Photoshop 5.0. it turns out one of them is caused by a dead CPU fan.. the computer works with every apps except Photoshop and one file in Lotus.
The second problem I have turns out to be a virus (CIH).

This may or may not apply to you.. but it won't hurt to check.
