Adobe acrobat XI 11.0.07 process does not terminate

Recently i updated adobe acrobat reader, and i noticed a peculiar thing.
When looking with process explorer at the running processes, i noticed that every time i close adobe acrobat, it does not terminate. But continues to use memory and cpu time(up to 25 %). Has anybody else seen this erroneous behavior since the last update of adobe acrobat ?

I should also mention that every time that i want to view a pdf file, a new adobe acrobat reader instance is started. After some reading various pdf files, for example 8, i still have 8 adobe acrobat processes running after closing them all.

Apparently, after turning off various unsafe features in the preference menu of adobe, i solved the problem by accident. But i do not know which setting is responsible for solving the erroneous behavior.

It is in the preference menu, section internet.
When i turn off "allow fast web view" and "allow speculative downloading in the background", the problem is solved most off the time.

Adobe Reader has set up auto programs for as long as I can remember. You can disable one in Task Manager, Start-up tab (called Adobe Reader and Acrobat Manager). I have been disabling for years and never noticed any problems.

The Reader also sets up a Windows Service called Adobe Acrobat Update Service that starts every time you boot the system -- regardless of what you specify in Preferences. I select the do not update or notify option and it still runs. I just change the Service from Automatic to Manual.

Every time Reader is updated, it re-establishes these two features. So if you don't want them, count on turning them off with each update.

I do not see any Adobe Processes running when Reader is closed.

I do have to say that for a while my pc was reacting slowly, now since i know that there were several adobe reader processes running and killing them all, makes my pc more responsive again.

@Whisper2
Thank you.

I did this all before but forgot that it all gets enabled again after adobe acrobat reader updates.
The adobe acrobat update service i have turned to manual as well again.
I do not have a startup tab in the task manager, i use windows 7 but i used msconfig to check. Adobe is really into the business of making windows bloated.
When i disable the adobe reader and acrobat manager from msconfig, i noticed there are two entries. One disabled( i did that long ago) and one that was enabled. I disabled it again.

What worries me, is that a pdf file can load anything from other out side websites. I hope only when i click a link and not automatically through a javascript. And now pdf files can be saved as well.

Turning off the speculative downloading and fast web view does not always help. If i leave them open for more then 10 seconds, adobe will not always terminate when closed down.
Now i have four adobe acrobat reader processes that do not terminate. All use 24% to ~25% cpu time while nothing is opened and the processes just hang around. So 100% cpu time total.

I just received a message from the adobe updater that there is an update available. After installing it, the issue as described in this thread is gone.

It took 'only' 3 months. D:

But it works. :)

YEEGH.
It is not solved, the problem is still there.
Adobe closes down when the auto updater has run. But now it hangs again. Taking 24% CPU time an instance, while hanging.
I have to force it to close down by using process explorer or the task manager.

Your problem is that even though its 2014 you're still using Adobe Reader. Switch to Foxit or if your computer is slow and low on resources; or you need something basic without a lot of functionality go for SumatraPDF.

I will try foxit. I have just installed it. And use it as my default pdf reader.
The reason why i had not installed foxit is because of pdf incompatibilities in the past. It would not correctly display the content of pdf files.
Perhaps these issues are solved now. I will give it a shot.
