Adjusting LCD brightness/contrast

Got a new monitor and I just don't like the brightness/contrast as much as I did on my older monitor. Is there any diagnostic tool that may make it easier to adjust properly? Or is it just a game of eyeballing it until it best suits me.

EDIT: You may want to ignore the recommendations in the above link and just use its test patterns since some LCD monitors apparently have their brightness and contrast controls reversed.
