Adjusting fan speed with 2-pin?

I am currently looking at an 80mm Panaflo L1A fan as a replacement to quiet down my computer. Since this is a 2-pin fan, would I be able to adjust the fan speed blindly without the RPM sensing device? (The fan would be converted from 2-pin to 3-pin to connect with my mobo.)

Or, if someone has seen a place where they specifically state an RPM sensing fan, please let me know.

Needed Specs:
- 80mm
- RPM Sensing
- ~21dB

Ok. Options.

1. Do it blindly with speedfan. I use a L1A 2pin to my mobo header and I can blindly adjust it with speedfan. Helps that I have a case window and can watch it spin up/down. Check mobo list for compatability.

2. Get one of these and use speedfan with rpm sensing (or make your own if you can solder the extra sensing wire.)

3. Did I mention get speedfan?

4. Just buy a fan with an included 3pin connector. Fan speed sensing is pretty common. Most fans have it. You just need the third wire (power/ground/sense). Oh and use speedfan.

just connect it to a fan controller. not sure the auto fan control stuff is based on rpm anyways though, thought they just vary power

I'm using 3 L1A's in my case right now all connected to my board. You don't need a 3 pin connector to use them, you will however need to mod one of the sides of the connectors with a razor to get it to fit, don't worry; you can't fry anything by connecting it wrong.

Ehh.. Speedfan is a piece of software. No razor required.

Yeah?......

Well the fans have to be connected to the motherboard, 2 pin connectors don't fit (very well) without modification. Look Here to see what I'm referring to, I'm editing my post to make it more clear.

Personally I prefer a fan controller to speed fan, for a couple of reasons.

1. A fan controller is much easier to access to alter the speeds
2. Speedfan takes cpu usage to manage the fans.

Also, TripperJoe, getting those 2 to 3 pin converters won't add rpm sensing. The fan has to support it from the start.
