Adjusting a CRT monitor from the inside?

My problem is that is seems like in the lower right corner of my Dell P1130 (21" CRT) there is a slight green tinge that looks like it's being affected by a magnet. I can adjust the "landing" option to make the monitor look better, but it's still shows.

I've moved the monitor to multiple locations, so I know the problem is with the monitor.

I've been told that there are magnets placed inside the case of the monitor to correct the image.

I've taken the case off the monitor and I don't see any magnets at all (at least nothing that I see that could be adjusted.

I have no idea what I'm doing, and obviously am being extremely cautious.

What parts of the monitor will cause a discharge of the capacitors? I really only see 1 large one, but I assume there are other places that could effectively kill me.

Where would these magnets be located?

I'm not going to bother taking this thing to a repair shop. I might as well try to fix it myself or sell it for a few bucks.

Anyone here with experience with this?

Not sure about magnets but there is a focus pot to adjust...that's as much as I know.

This is a good site.

I'm reading the site right now actually :)

Degaussing it does nothing, and I've even used a big degaussing coil. It made no difference to the image.

I'm kind of a pussy... I know how dangerous the inside of a CRT monitor can be, so I'm not really touching anything at all.

There are no adjustments you can make other than using a professional Degaussing coil -in the proper manner. How old is the CRT and how long has it been like this? What exactly got near the screen to couse this\?

Actually you can adjust it with the Purity Rings .. they are located on the NECK of the Picture Tube ... they are usually sealed with
a dab of Paint after they are adjusted, but may move from time to time ... if you want to try it, set up a Mirror in Front of the unit and
then Very Slowly and in Very Small Increments try moving the Purity Rings .. there are 2 of them and you may need to move ONE or
Both either Singly or Together ... best to do this with a Cross Hatch or COLOR BARS being shown as a pattern

Hey bruceb,

I actually see 6 rings on my tube.

There were 2 together (closer to the front of the tube) and then 4 (another 2 sets of 2) a little closer to the back of the tube. (all have dabs of paint)

The 2 closest to the front seem to make no visible changes no matter how far left or right I turn them.

The other 4 seem snug so I don't think I'll move those.

The othe rings are for setting the Color Convergence so when the three colors
RED. GREEN & BLUE are all properly set you get a White Dot ... it is difficult
to adjust properly without using a DOT Generator which is a tool that shops
that service Monitors would have ... a regular tv shop will not have one that
will work with the unique input signals that a computer monitor uses

Very good CRT site.

OP, it's been about a year since I read it but he does go into some detail about bonding
magnets to the side of the tube for fine adjustment. First they are held in place with tape.
Once sure, bonded on with silicone adhesive. ( I  my Mit 2060u NF )

It's kind of funny that you mention this. I have a Dell P1110 21" monitor and I really like it alot but I have a similar thing happening.

Here's the thing though, my monitor by the "Start" menu has a different color in that section (I think it's more green). It has been like this pretty much since I got it and at times worse than others so I thought it was just the monitor (I got it as an off-lease). I found out later that it wasn't my monitor at all, but something in the position/location in my room because I took it to a LAN and the colors and everything looked fine. I noticed lately though that as well there are small horizontal lines kind of like distortion running across the screen evenly spaced apart.

I'm not sure if it has to do with my large tower speakers on either side of my desk or if there is another electrical disturbance but it sounds much the same as the problem you are experiencing. I have degaused as well and that doesn't improve the effect at all. I believe it's either my speakers or there is a power issue in my apartment. I can just imagine the huge magnets in my speakers and what effect they have on sensitive electronic equipment because they would not be shielded like normal computer speakers would be.
