ADHD--Do the medications really work?

I'm just curious if the medications people have been prescribed for ADHD really help much?

I thought I had it but now I think its just lack of interest in certain subjects combined with poor diet and exercise regimen. I'm starting to believe if I exercise more it will help clear my mind :p

If it's really ADHD, ie properly diagnosed, then yes, the meds will make a difference. Unfortunately, I believe most of the time calling a kid's behavior ADHD is just an excuse for a lack of discipline.

Although I have never had any direct experience with it. The drugs do help you focus, but the best way IMO is to instill discpline on yourself to force yourself to focus. There's two ways to take care of a problem, the correct way or the easy way. It's your choice.

Yeah like I said... I think for me I have control over whatever it is and I just choose not to work hard enough to conquer it sadly :(

And that is probably the case in 97% of the people "diagnosed" with ADHD. I think parents take the easy way too many times for their kids.

Pretty much. They usually use ADHD when talking about kids and ADD when referring to adults, because the hyperactivity symptoms tend to go away with age.

Don't misunderstand me though, I've never claimed that is the reason I do bad in school or that I need the medication or even want it. The thought of some mind altering constant drug in my system is rather disturbing.

I'd rather be normal and a little unfocused with a little more work put into controlling my interest than to be something I'm not--a drug. (except on weekends and if it is of the cannabis or alcohol nature :)

But but but...the drug companies are now advertising drugs for ADULT adhd.

Aldous Huxley had it right in 'Brave New World'.

Yes, they work. My son was diagnosed with ADHD two years ago. At first, his mother and I were hesitant to put him on Ritalin because of all supposed side effects associated with it. However, soon we had no choice, he was failing all his classes due to not being able to concentrate and being disruptive in class. Once he was on medication it was a complete turnaround and he's now one of the best students.
