Additional power connector

Hello, I was actually curious today about a connector on my MB, I have a 12V auxiliary power connector for graphics on my board picture (3rd over). I noticed that the majority of other motherboards do not have this and I was wondering if it was necessary? I have an 8800GT with a 6 pin connector to the PSU so could this actually be harmful? Just want to know what you think because A: I'm curious, and B: it makes keeping the cables neat a PITA over there.
