Adding the Quick Launch toobar to Windows 7

I miss my quick launch. So I found this:

Step 1: Right click on the Taskbar and choose Toolbars and then New Toolbar.

Step 2: Now copy and paste the following line into the Folder box in the New Toolbar dialog box:

%userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

Click SAVE

Step 3: Now you?ll see the Quick Launch bar shows up at the right of the taskbar. Next, right-click on the Taskbar and turn off Lock the Taskbar.

Step 4: Right-click on the divider and turn off Show Text and Show Title. Also, click on View and change it to Small Icons.

That?s it! Now you got your small icons on the quick launch bar again!

It can remain at the right end of the taskbar OR grab it & move it to (near the Windows Orb) where you are accustomed, at the left end of the taskbar.
Finally remember to right-click on the taskbar and choose Lock Taskbar again to remove the divider. Enjoy!

What's the point? I have all the same small icons on the left side of the taskbar simply by pinning them to it. Seems to me to be a lot easier than creating another layered toolbar.

Why would you do that? The Win 7 toolbar is already the quick launch toolbar if you just pin the icon to it.

I don't want to sound pretentious, but anyone using a "quick launch" in Windows 7 is missing the point.

Except that I have about 20 icons there and even at the small icon settings they take up my whole taskbar.

And its just a tip for those who WANT the toolbar.

I have to disagree with this! The win7 taskbar is nice but I find quick launch is still useful for helping me position the program icons the way I like them.
Secondly there are a few program icons that I personally like to set toward the corner of the screen as apposed to being grouped with all the other program icons and quick launch makes that possible.
So I totally get the win7 taskbar and like it but I will use it and quick launch to get the results that suit the way I like to work.

I have 23 icons, set to small, and they barely take up 3/4ths of the top row (I run a doublesized, auto-hiding taskbar)

You know you can move pinned and running icons around as much as you want on the taskbar, right?

Raduque I think you misunderstood what I meant, first all the program icons default to the left of the screen next to the start button and by using quick launch as a spacer I can push them more to the center of the screen which is more to my liking.
Second you can move the icons around as you say but you can't separate them, unless I'm missing some functionality in the task bar. So as I said in my first post there are a few icons I like to keep separate from the others and quick launch allows me to do this, what can I say I'm a icon segregationist.:laugh:

I haven't gotten used to Win7's default taskbar scheme, and ended up resurrecting my Quick Launch bar, which I run full-width with large icons, plus a full-width row for window buttons, like this :camera:. The drawback is that it takes up more screen space.

For those who like the new-style Taskbar, enjoy 🙂 but if you're not sold on it, you can always change it. I have to admit, they didn't make it easy 😛

I really like having an internet explorer and firefox link on my toolbar that allows me to open a new window to my homepage with just a click. You can't see it but I also uncombined each window like you did.

I prefer the quicklaunch too as I cannot add certain network shortcuts to the new one.

A good point. I like to have my Power Options shortcut on the taskbar and Windows7 won't let me add it. I probably could hunt down how to do it, but its easier to just have quick launch.

You can open a new window on the new taskbar using middle click (mouse wheel, usually).

They didn't make it easy, because it's on-record that Win7 UI devs don't want people using the Quick Launch anymore. 😛

Thanks techs. I tried out the Win7 Beta, but waiting to put together my i7 and for my real copy of Win7 to make the switch. I use QL alot in Vista and XP.
