Adding system ram forces new geforce2mx to lockup

I recently got a inno3d geforce2 MX 400 to replace my tnt2 viper770. After installing the card and reinstalling Windows 2000 i was consistently locking up in both diablo2 (direct3d) and counterstrike (opengl). I assumed it was the via drivers fault so i reinstalled win2k again... and again... and again. i went through every single possible order of service pack/via drivers/nvidia drivers possible. I even tried winxp still no luck stopping the freezes. Decided it must be hardware conflict so i stripped system and of everything but video, one ram chip, and one hard drive. It worked great no freezes after hours of play. First thing i tried adding back was the other stick of ram. instant lockup again. i took the 2nd ram chip out and added everything else back in. worked fine. add ram: freeze. using either of the chips solo doesn't cause problems but having 2 chips (in any 2 of the 3 slots) makes the video unstable

Anyone have ANY clue how to get this thing to run with all 512MB of ram?

Alot of Via chipsets have known problems when adding alot of memory and using some of the later video cards. I've read reports like yours from others users on the web using Via chipsets and not just NVIDIA cards. I can't stand Via.
