Hello, Im seeking some advice on how to setup an RT314 with a second switch. I have the RT314 connected to my Cable modem and provide internet access for 4 computers, 2 of which are just distributed computing nodes. I am adding a couple more computers to the DC project and need more connections since my router only has 4 ports. I picked up a netgear FS105 which has 4 additional switch ports and an Auto Uplink port.

How do I cable this setup so as to have an 8 port switch (or 7)? The router doesnt have a separate uplink port but I cant find my manual to read up on it. I thought it said it would uplink via port 1 but Im old and mouldy and cant remember and it doesnt seem to work like that using a straight patch cable. I have a patch cable running from the switches dedicated auto uplink to the no.1 port on the router. Am I thinking this out wrong? Should the router now see 8 ports or do I have this setup backwards or something. Please pardon my senility.

Thanks for your help

Sounds like you're making it far more complicated than it needs to be. If you plug the cable in both ends and you get a link light on both sides, you did it right. Here's the general rule:

PC to switch: Use a standard cat5 cable.
PC to PC or switch to switch: Use a crossover cable.

An "uplink port" just does the crossover function in the port as opposed to the cable.
