Because they had (had being the key word) a vulnerability that had gone unnoticed by anyone for a decade and was (beta) patched 12 hours after reported? If that's an issue, you probably should rid yourself of any internet enabled electronics as the odds are quite good you've got software on your computer far worse than that (for example: Windows).

Steam is crappy drm. Regardless of anything else, it's still a drm system. After a long period of not buying, I got a HumbleBundle package. Most of the games were Steam only. I ate the $10 loss, and unsubscribed to HumbleBundle mail. If I want a game, I'll get it from gog or something.

Steam is essentially sandboxed on my new rig.

I boot windows to game only, and then use linux for everything else.

If you are still hating on steam at this point...you are VERY behind the times and if you are a gamer you are just hurting yourself. Windows 10 is more of an issue than Steam is or ever has been.

I wouldn't rule out the possibility of win malware being able to mount lunux partitions

They can try, linux drive is an encrypted ext4 file system.
Well played!! I'm hesitant to use encrypted partitions because if I loose the password I loose my data. Even if the system becomes unbootable I may loose my data because it becomes a pita of a research project how restore encrypted lunix partitions even if you wrote down the password.

I might consider thought to make / encrypted in a dual boot win10 setup, while keeping my home data on a safer partition. That would add a huge level of security.
