Adding side and top fans to case

Well this is my first pc that i have built from scratch. I oc my p4 2.8b to 3.26, however my p4 is running extremely hot it idles at 41 and full load at 54. I am useing a zalman (flower type) heatsink on my p4.

I have an aluminum kingwin 242 with a plexiglass window. Currently i have two 80mm intake fans and one 80 mm fan for exhuast. I am going to add two more fans (1) one on the side of the case probably around my 9800 pro (2) another fan on the top of the case. Both fans i am hoping to use 120mm fans. Since they are extremely quiet and move alot of air.

My questions are:
1) is it a good idea to put a 120mm fan on top of teh case?
2) should the fan on the side of the case be an intake or exhast?
3) how can i mod the case easily with the least amount of work (i was planing to use a dremel tool)

just have a back and top exhaust fan, that combination is supposed to be the best one

what 120mm fans do u have that are extremely quiet and move alot of air?

I put a fan on the top of one of my cases (and I mean the top, not up high on the back panel). Seems to cool it really, really well. It sits under a desk so no chance of anything getting spilled on it and leaking inside.

I like a side a fan on my gaming rig. Blows cool air in and around my 9800pro. Consequently, I don't have the heat probs many seem to complain about with the 9800 pro.

I used a dremel to cut a hole in the aluminum. Don't know how it would work with plexiglass. I have the "router" thingy which helped. Wasn't a perfectly round hole, but hard to notice with the fan grill anyway. I wouldn't cut any metal unless the case was empty, lot of "metal powder" produced by the dremel.

Hope that helps,

Fern

Thanks for the artiicle.

Well i know since, 120mm obviously has bigger fan blades, thus can push more air compared to an 80 mm fan that has to spin alot faster inorder to cool the pc the same as a 120 mm.

But i still have one more question, should the side fan blow air in or out?

sorry i really didnt fully comprehend the article till now, my thinking is that all fans doesnt cool as well becuase the cool air pushed into teh pc from the front is being taken out by the side fan on teh case. It makes sense that top and rear provide the best cooling bceause its like creating a vacum always making sure air is passing thru teh cpu and mobo where it is the hottest.

Thus i am thiking about putting a side intake forcing teh air to be drawn out from teh top and teh rear where the cpu is.

any other opinions?

Couple of things... I personally don't consider those CPU temperatures to be all that hot, but to each their own...

Which Zalman are you using, the 7000 series (round with a fan "inside") or one of the older "fan" shaped ones, or one of the older round with a fan on top held on with plastic? If it is NOT one of the 7000 series, then time to buy a new HSF. If it IS one of the 7000 series, do you have the "Fan Mate" hooked up? It is the little black box that comes with the 7000 series which can control your fan speed. If you have it hooked up, even if you have the knob turned so that the fan spins as fast as it can, it will spin a bit faster bypassing the Fan Mate (because it isn't 100% efficient, thus losing a few tenths of a volt).

If you're thinking about cutting into that nice looking case, the first cut you try should be to remove the stock fan grill at the back of the case and replace it with a wire finger guard. That should increase air flow for "free." Something else to try is to remove the air filter from the front of the case. Since you were thinking of an intake fan on the side panel, I don't think dust is one of your primary worries and removing the filter will increase air flow.

well i was thinking about putting some kind of protection just incase anything does fall thru. But i am thinking to unplug the front fans becuase i ahve been reading articles about always having negative pressure in the case. Where thers is more exhast than intake. I am wondering what i can use for proctection incase anything does fall thru the top fan??

Future Mods:
So my plans are to remove the front two fans. Adding a 120mm fan on top for exhuast and add a 120 mm fan intake on the side. Then iwill remove those stock fan grill on the back of my case. All done wiht a dremel tool. Is this a good approad to help lower my case temp????

when dremeling cut a square with diagonal corners straight lines easier for dremeling. takes a long time either way though. top exhaust is good cooling. but its noisey. if u don't already own adremel, i don't recommend it if your on a budget. better to spend on a new case with superior cooling.
