I need to add a file server to a windows 2000 active directory. I'm only slightly familiar with AD so I just want to make sure that I don't miss anything before going into the project!

The server will be Windows 2000 Pro and its only purpose will be for file storage for 2 depts. of the organization. Is there some kind of "add server wizard" or something of the sort? What would be your suggestions to get this accomplished?

Thanks,

Right click on "my computer" and select properties, than go to the computer name tab. Keep in mind that only someone who has administrative rights to the domain will be able to add it so you will have to contact whoever is in charge of the domain (your IT department) to have them do this. I would ask that you please coordinate your adding this machine to the network with them as they will ultimatly become responsible for it.

We have administrative rights to the network and will be doing all the work to up the server in. I just need to know if there is something special i need to do in Active Directory so that permissions and such will work accross the network.

just make sure that both the NTFS and the share permissions will allow the groups access to those files.

I would assume you are already aware that a Win2k Pro box will only allow 10 active connections to your file server. If that is enough, you're fine but if not, you need to install Win2k Server...

As far as AD goes you'll just have to add the box to the domain and everything will be taken care of.

Actually, any domain user can add a machine to the domain.

You must, of course, have local admin privs on the local box to change its domain membership.
