Adding resistor to mobo fan connector

I've added a variable resistor to my 12V 120mm fan and everything came out just as I wanted. I'm now considering doing the same with a fan mounted on the motherboard. Will this be a bad thing adding a resistor to the fan outlet on a motherboard?

I have 2 chrome knobs that are mounted on the front panel that will eventually manually adjust rpm.

Was also thinking of disassembling a digital oven thermometer and using it as a crude temp gauge for my graphics card. (mostly for cosmetics but it'd be nice if the temperature changes a little)
