Adding remote control volume to speakers

Hi all,

I have a set of Altec 251 speakers which are connected to my DVD player's audio out. The DVD's video out goes to the TV. My speakers do not come with a remote or wired control, as the only volume and balance controls are on one of the speakers itself.

I wanted to know if there is a device that can be put within my setup that allows me to have remote control capability for the speaker's volume.

The DVD player remote has no volume control and the TV's volume won't work since only the Video and not the Audio goes to the TV.

Thanks!

Yes, there are a fairly large number of remote controls that you can get for PCs. You can often get the simple credit card sized one from Creative Labs for low bucks on ebay. And you can get complex ones that can control lots of video/audio/software for more $$$. Newegg carries several of them.

Well all he wants is to control the volume and that is the cheapest way I know of... It's so cheap, you could get it and experiment and resell it on eBay or elsewhere if you find it doesn't work for you and not be out any money. Many of the others cost at least 10x that price - e.g. newegg has refurbed Ahanix iMon for $50.! (I found it for around $40 via Froogle). On ebay, if you search on 'creative remote' you will find the most listings.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I notice though that these devices only interface with a PC... do you all know of any that I can put just in between the speakers and the DVD player? That is basically my setup... no PC involved.

You might be able to get a remotely controllable preamp of some kind. But it might cost nearly as much as your DVD player based on supply and demand. Places like halted (hsc.com) or bgmicro.com or allelectronics.com and other odd-lot electronics outfits. Or maybe you could rig a wired remote volume control which would probably be the cheapest but might reduce the sound quality a bit.
