Caveman, check out this page for information on memory options for your laptop. It appears you have two SODIMM slots, w/ the capability of putting up to 1GB modules in each of the slots, for a total of 2GB memory.

If you buy that memory from HP/Compaq you'll surely pay too much for it. Go to Crucial.com for memory for your X1000.

By the looks of it you can mix memory, i.e. a 512 and a 256. The HP/Compaq page doesn't say anything about a 1GB and 512MB.

FWIW I did what you want to do w/ an IBM R40 that I got my college daugther last fall. It cam w/ one 256MB stick and I added a second to bump it to 512. I purchased the stick from Newegg for $44 at the time. Considerably cheaper than what IBM wanted for the stick.

99% of laptops in use today wil support mixing of sizes, and even speeds, he machine will compensate completely
