IN SHORT - how easy is it to put a new stick of ram into a HP Pavilion, and whats the warranty situation? I've found a stick on crucial.com via the godsend selector.
IN LONG -
My sis asked me about getting a latop, I said i'd look for one if she gets serious about it, since i'd do it properly and take a lot of time to get the right one and a good deal.
So anyway, she just turns up with some big box and i notice 'HP' and think 'oh dear'. It's a HP Pavilion, the 15" TFT seems erm well i can read it; 2500+ XP-mobile; not horrific considering she went to Comet  . 30gb harddrive aint bad, considering she seems to think she'll be using it 'to be a writer' .
Anyway, the :disgust: is 256mb ram - of which 64gb is used by the IGP (Rad 3200).
It takes aaaaaages to boot and load stuff, i keep wanting to stick my fingers in and spin the hardrive faster, so I figure remove the crap they install and maybe add some ram - HP's own page reccomends 256mb+ for winxp SP2, and that customers ideally have 512mb, so even they must think 192mb sucks.
I found a supposably compatible stick on crucial.com for a reasonable £65/£35 (512mb/256mb, respectively), i reckon HP might do upgrades but i bet they'd charge £200 for a stick of ram (and not give a choice other than to post off the laptop for a month for them to install it).
I'm concerned how easy/hard it is to install ram on a laptop, because i REALLY dont want to go doing anything to someone else's £600 laptop unless i'm more than confident. Also, anyone know what the HP warranty situation is regarding ram upgrades?
