adding RAM: performance boost?

im planning to buy a stick of 512mb of ram. right now i have 256mb, so it will bring it to a total of 768mb of ram. how would the performance increase, and percentage wise?

by the way, my video card has a loose fan for over half a year. anything bad that would happen?

for more detail:

have a stick of 256mb (pc2100). going to buy a stick of 512mb (pc3200).

i know the pc3200 will drop down to pc2100 speeds, but i am getting it because its way cheaper.

i have a amd 2200+ cpu computer with win xp

im finding it takes awhile to open things right now, and when i try to open windows explorer and another program at once, it would take at least 5-10 second before the second program would even start to begin loading.

yes more memory will definately help you. It will make your computer acces the harddrive a lot less when you swap between programs.
