Adding LAN uplink to Cable Router

I have finally configured and have up and running three of the family computers networked through our Linksys 4 port Router, and online.

Now, we have three more computers for the children. I'm thinking that just networking them together through a LAN hub, then uplinking the hub to the router won't be suffecient for the router to segregate each of the Kids computers to know which packet goes where, or am I wrong here?

So far I have hooked up the hub to the router, and my little girls computer to the hub, but I am getting nothing, the lights on hub and router are active, but her computer does not recognize the network. However if I hook her direct to the router, she is online. Do I need to install 2 NIC cards, and make one of the kids computers an ICS host, or can I identify the hub as a network group, and ID each computer in that group?

I'm in the process of reading what I can, but I always look for other ideas as there may be more than one way to skin a cat, (or link a network), and one way easier than the other.

I appreciate any help in this situation.

Thank You,

ok... i'm kinda getting lost in your description of your system.

so you have 3 computers networked.
and you have another 3 computers that needs to be networked?
so you have total of 6?

you have 4 port router and a hub?

what os are you using?

Is there an "uplink" button or port on the hub? If so, that's what you should be using to connect the hub to one of the switched ports on the router. If there is no uplink port, you need a crossover cable.

Are you doing a WINIPCFG "renew" when you move the cable between the router and the hub?

Hi,

Yes, three computers are already using 3 ports of a 4 port router. The other three computers I plan to link through a LAN hub to the other port of the 4 port router.

The LAN Hub has an uplink port, and I have that linked to the forth port of the router, then I have my little girls computer hooked into the Lan hub, which in turn is linked to the router. The lights on the router and LAN Hub are working showing as being connected and communicating, but her computer is no longer recognizing the internet. However, if I take the LAN hub out of the link, she is on the internet. I have not yet tried removing all her network software, and re-installed it, I know sometimes that becomes a possibility, even though it wasn't necessary when I originally hooked her up to the router directly.

operating system is Windows 98 SE, which does take advantage of ICS.

Another possibility, I'm not sure if it will work or not, I could hook her computer up to the Cable Modem using a USB cable, then make her the ICS client for the rest of our little network, but I'm not sure if the cable modem will work with BOTH the USB and the RJ45 plug in use?

I've read quite a bit in the manual, but everyone knows what manuals read like. I may have to read it a few time in order to understand it.. 🙂

Any Idea's? All passing thoughts are appeciated...

Thanks,

No i dont believe you will be able to use both ports of the cable adapter, but you should be able to connect the hub to your router, do as you say you were going to and redo the networking setup for her computer, there is no reason why this shouldnt work, in theory .. good luck ..

-a possibility is to get a router with more ports if this will not work ..

danella:

uplinking a hub off a port on your router will work just fine, and all your kids' computers (and all the king's men) will work famously.
as Athena said, if neither your hub nor your router have an "uplink" port (switchable or otherwise), then you'll need a crossover cable.

Thank you all so much,

I had forgotten about reinstalling all the network driver, (duh), once we get the kids to bed, I will uninstall their netwrok setup, and reinstall it again, and see what happens. If this doesn't work, I'll probably be bald in the morning. 🙂

Thanks again,

Thanks everyone for the help...

It took 3 times of removing the Network drivers, (3rd time from safe mode), and reinstalling the network software and setup.

Then, after reboot, I got a message of conflict between her IP and Adapter address. I simply went to winipcfg, released all settings, and had it apply new settings. All the kids Puters, (and all the Kings men 😀 ), are happily traving the internet again....

Thanks again for the support and confirmation that I was on the right track...
