is it possible to add a second hdd to laptop?

my friend has one and would like to upgrade.

he's got the hd, and wants me to install it for him.

if it's not possible to put 2 internal drives (space limitations) how can I copy his old drive to the new one?

sorry for ignorence, but I've never had a laptop, always been a gamer.
 
some laptops like from dell have a media bay which can accomodate a removable media bay hdd ie a laptop hdd in a media bay carrier in place of the usual removable optical or floppy drive. this is in addition to the normal internal hdd!
 
is there any other way to get the data off the original? do they have IDE cables? if so does it work like a desk top, just throw it on and xfer ?
