I got a free copy of COD5 with a video card I bought. Is it possible to add/register this game to steam such that it uses the steam interface to find multiplayer games? If I use the game's builtin multiplayer game finder, am I accessing the same list of games that people who bought the game through steam see?

On a similar note, I am considering buying COD4. Same questions as above - if I buy it retail instead of through steam, can I register the game with steam and use it's multiplayer interface to find games? If I use the game's builtin multiplayer game finder, am I accessing the same list of games that people who bought the game through steam see?

I'm pretty sure you can't register non-Valve games bought elsewhere with Steam. I tried it with a few titles, including COD5 and couldn't make it work. I believe you use the same multiplayer interface regardless of how you bought the game, but I'm not positive.

Only a few titles can be registered on steam without buying from steam. There is a list that you can pull up from the screen where you type in the CD keys. The list is very short. I tried to do that with some of the games they sell over steam for a few of my games that the dvds got too scratched up to install. No dice.

It's not the same, but you can add any game you want to steam by adding it's shortcut. It'll give you the steam overlay and everyone else can see what you're playing.

I've had problems with one or two non-Steam games that I've tried running through Steam, usually a blank screen on load up. The majority of non-Steam games that I've added run smoothly though.

I have a problem like this. I have a friend that came over and installed a game from his steam profile, (GTA IV). It required a key code and it worked so i played it on my comp with his steam log-in. Then when he left he logged me out and when i log into me and try to play it it brings me to the buy page, even though it's installed on my comp. I know you can back up a game and then regain it onto another steam profile (without a key code). Know what I'm asking is how do i get GTA IV onto my library?

This is probably on the shadier side of legal so we can't really help you out. If you want to play the game, you pay for it yourself.

That said... the game IS on your drive still, you just need to find where it installed.

even if you buy from steam, you use the game's server browser. it never uses steam's server browser.

I don't see anything about Call of Duty, sorry.

Time to get new glasses:

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 CD Keys in this format: 1AB2C-D3FGH-456I7-JK8LM-NOP9Q
Call of Duty: Black Ops CD Keys in this format: 1AB2C-D3FGH-456I7-JK8LM-NOP9Q

I assume COD5 is Modern Warfare 2.

I got COD : BO from Direct2Drive, and I just took the key to Steam and installed it from there.

But the previous poster is correct, these programs use an internal server browser. You night be able to join on a friend through Steam though. I never tried it.

nothing about this is legal. why do you think steam would just let you play games that you don't own? Your friend owned the game, not you. The game data is on your machine, that doesn't give you the right to play it.

"I know you can back up a game and then regain it onto another steam profile (without a key code)." - no you absolutely cannot do this

So your question was "how do i get GTA IV onto my library".. the answer is: buy the game.
