say i got a family member that knows he wont drive for another 4 yrs..

he'd like to have me add him to my policy.... which I dont think costs me? anything....

and having him listed in my policy will, in four years, have built a history profile for him, such that when he gets a car and gets it insured, he's not a 28yr old 'rookie' as far as driving record is concerned.

Can this work out this way?

If the person has no license then you are wasting time adding the person to your policy. Auto insurance does not cover an unlicensed person.

okay let me clarify, the person HAS a license already for 3 yrs, but ain't got a car....

won't get one for another 4 yrs (don't need one yet)

but after those 4 yrs, trying to avoid him looking like a 'rookie' and save him some money in insurance policy...

your insurance will jump to an insane rate if you add someone young to your policy. personally i've heard many horror stories. don't even tell the insurance that you have someone younger, with a license, and living with you, unless you plan to let him drive your car.

Your insurance will go up.. the only way he can get an insurance history is to add him as an occassional driver. and if he'd had a lapse in insurance coverage more than 30 days more than likely your rates will skyrocket.

Instead of adding him you your policy, have him save the money he would be paying you because your premiums went up. He can then use all that money to buy insurance in 4 years.

In the UK AFAIK, you don't get anything by being on someone elses insurance, don't know about the US.
If he's not getting a car until 28 anyway, it really doesn't matter. His premiums will go down once he hits 25, so at 28, they won't be too high anyway. (Even if he hasn't really driven before, I would assume).
