Do you have to type in any type of product key when you add a Client Access License pack to a Windows Server 2003 machine? I know that on Windows 2000 Server, you just tell it how many you are adding. Does 2003 still handle adding CALs the same way?

No.

You have to entar a key that describes the type (user / device) and number of licences purchased.

You don't even need to do that. The license logging service is disabled by default on 2003, for good reason. It's buggy and unnecessary, and you wont be seeing it in the future. It was meant to be a helpful way for admins to track their licenses, but it never worked as designed.

The most important thing to do is keep track of your actual license documentation. That is the only thing an auditor will care about if you were ever to be audited.
