Adding baby to insurance: Going through BULLSH*T!

Our girl was born on 12/12/02. A Thursday.

The lady that took all of our information for the birth certificate the next day. 12/13/02.

She got the information into the state of Florida the following Monday (typical state office, closed weekends, no biggie).

The insurance company was closed for the holidays, but opened again on 1/6/03. My wife called the insurance company on the 6th to request that the baby is added to the insurance.

A packet was sent out and we received it on 1/11/03. It stated that we needed to include the child's birth certificate with the form that needed to be returned, but we did not yet have the birth certificate.

We received the certificate from the state of Florida on 2/3/03. It stated on the certificate that we had filed for the certificate on 12/16/02, but was not issued until 1/29/03. I guess the birth certificate office for the state of Florida is really backed up.

We sent this into the insurance company the next day. Just today we received back a letter stating that they REFUSE to add the baby to the insurance.

Why?

Because the change of status must filed within 30 days of the change in status!

BULL!

They're closed for two weeks, request a birth certificate that I don't have, the state of Florida takes a month and a half to issue the certificate and now her doctor bills are MY PROBLEM?!?!

What the F*CK am I supposed to do now?!?!

Call your local representative and explain to them what happend with the time line and Im sure they'll help you rectify the situation. Something similiar happend to my sister and she called her companies rep and they walked through it all (Albeit after two hours) and all was fixed.

Just take your uber-patience pills before you get on the horn with your insurance rep. You'll need them.

First off congrats on the new baby. Second i would get on the phone with them next time they are open and not get off until they add her to the policy. As you said none of it was your fault so i think they would realize this and add her in. Good luck.

what u should do, pay the bill. Untill the baby was offically added to insurance plan, they are not responsibel to cover any bills even if the reason for not adding is b/s

Explain to them that you will be talking to a lawyer.

Does your baby have some medical bills other than the usual check ups?

Just the usual check ups.

Call them up and threaten to drop them as insurance providers unless they cough up!

Not an option. The insurance is through my wife's work.

Wrong. The baby is covered under the mother's insurance by defaul for at least 30 days. This is a law or something.

in that case calll u attorney general they should be able to get it strained out very quickly

Call your state department of insurance and talk to a investigator. I know that there are a lot of posters on here that hate lawyers but they can be your best friend.
A good lawyer can and will if necessary request a audit of the insurance co to see if they are finincialy stable to operate in the state. This cannot be denied, believe me the insurance co does not want to be audited by the state and will cave in. Usually just a threat to do this by a atty. will turn the insurance co around.

Well... It's not the 30 days I'm worried about... it's the next 30. 😉

I might call a lawyer if a call to the insurance company on Monday doesn't straighten things out.
