Adding another 2gig stick to my system for 4gb total

Anyone have any ideas? I have a new laptop with vista home premium. It comes with one 2gig stick and one 1 gig stick. I took out the one and put in another two gig stick. The bios sees four gigs but the system properties only sees 3 gigs.
