Adding an SATA HD to a system with only IDE HDs

I'm cannibalizing my desktop to set up my next system. New mobo and cpu. The current setup included 3 IDE HDs and a DVD burner on the 4 IDEs. The new mobo has support for 4 IDEs and 2 SATA HDs. I ordered an SATA 500 GB drive that should arrive this week. Can I just set up my system now, booting to the primary master of my 1st IDE channel and connect the SATA drive later and have it a non-booting drive? If so, I will wipe the boot drive and repartition it and install Windows before the SATA drive comes. When I connect the SATA HD, will XP just see it and configure it as a new drive with the next available drive letter?

Yes, but make sure you initiate it under Disk Management as a Basic Disk.

Hmm, the HD didn't come today but I did install my motherboard and went into the BIOS. It showed a couple of additional channels and I can't remember exactly what they were called, but it did call them IDE channels and said they weren't being used. My 4 IDE devices were shown correctly. I assume those extra things were the SATA ones, but no mention was made of SATA. 😕
