Adding an HDD to my system

Im thinking of adding another HDD to my PC, and was wondering some of the options.

External USB, id probably want to buy the enclosure and probably a 200-250gb HDD. Itd be using USB 2.0 or whatever, so i dont think speed should be THAT much of an issue (data only). for anyone with experience, is this a good plan?

also, ive heard of raid, and my brother has the soyo dragon that has raid, and he has like 6 HDDs + CD...and its like..hey, i want that. ive also heard though that the raid just doubles up drives to help with backup or speed, is this true, or can it be used as additional drives?
