Adding a shell to your truck makes it no longer commercial???

So I noticed my '98 Camry cost me about $60 this year to register while my '98 F150 Scab still cost me $150+. (WTF???)

Trying to figure out what I might buy next (new car shopping) I wanted to make sure if I buy an SUV, I don't get nailed the same way w/ unjustified, ridiculously expensive DMV fees. Otherwise, it'll be cars from here on out & my '98 will be the last truck I own.

Anyway...........found this thread.

Adding a shell isn't enough. My dad's uncle had a camper on his truck and was pulled over for not having commercial plates, however, a search of the camper found tools. And he was ticketed. Now, we're talking about the kind of tools that you keep around in case you break down or need to fix something when you're camping.

It's definitely a racket. I've been paying a commercial license on my Dakota for years now and have always thought it was stupid.

Yes, pickups get registered as commercial, SUVs do not.

Dakota: Commercial pays the weight fee.
Durango: does not

Ford Ranger: Commercial
Ford Excursion: not

I'm not sure how full size vans fare.

It's the Soviet Socialist Republik of Californikzistan, what do you expect? Someone's gotta pay for those who don't (ie: the 16 million uninsured illegals clogging up roads, causing hit and runs, driving drunk, not paying fines and fees, etc).

I think an extra $7.50 per month in registration fees would be the least of my concerns when choosing a vehicle. That's chump change compared to differences in gas mileage, insurance, and depreciation between vehicles.

I've never heard them called shells before, must be a west coast thing. Before I read the description I was wondering why gluing a seashell or something to your tailgate would make a difference. :)

Yeah, as long as the government sticks it to us in little tolerable increments, we should just comply and let it slide. Again and again and again.

Well, except for the fact that most Suburbans/Excursions out there are pushin' much more weight than the typical 1/2 ton pickup truck.

So, in essence, perhaps they're *encouraging* SUV purchases?? :p

The latest proposals thru Sacto are just disgusting anyway.

Add even MORE DMV fees, but don't call them taxes, call them fees.

Get rid of housing loan mortgage interest write offs. That way we can reeeeeally stick it to California tax payers. (We'll figure out some sort of tax-free incentive for the illegal aliens so they keep coming over though)

Last, but not least.........Driver's licenses & insuro con grato for all illegal aliens in the state. Why should illegals have to pay for anything??? Hell, the taxpayers can do thaaaaaAAAaaat!!!
