Adding a NIC to a Dell?

A friend has a Dimension 4500S and needs a NIC. There is a short opening in the rear of the case for probably a Dell card, and one open long standard type opening via a device that plugs into the AGP slot to give 2 PCI slots. I have never seen a setup like this. What are the pros and cons of using either open PCI slot? Thank you.
