Do you think it would it be possible to add some kind of lock to a cabinet like this? Looking for something that would prevent small children from opening the cabinet and taking stuff out.

Sure. Quick and dirty would be tying the two loop handles together with a decorative piece of cord. You could install simple knobs at the top(out of reach?) that activate toggles that keep the doors shut. Or go with a real lock as is used on desks. Dunno exactly what kind, but a cabinetry supply company should have them.

If you fill the cabinets with car batteries wired in parallel, run the negative to a steel plate in front of the cabinet, and connect the positive to a copper handle (I'd go for a heavy one, preferably a handle style), there's a very high probability no child will open that cabinet.

I was gonna go with nails, but I like the battery option. If you'd prefer to not send them into cardiac arrest though, you can probably get by with a 9v.

edit: can you tell how much some of us just luv kids heehee

You could also use a flat piece of wood at the top. Use something like a paint stir stick. Cut two L shaped slots in the stick that will ride on screws you put in the cabinet. Screw the wood loosely to the cabinet so when they're in the vertical legs of the L, it blocks the cabinet doors. Lift the piece of wood and slide it in the horizontal legs of the Ls to access the cabinet.

yeah, it really depends on how old the kids are that the OP is trying to keep out of the cabinet. Anything from a simple child latch to a full-on lock might be needed.
