My friend gave me his old 20 gig HD and I'd like to add it to my current pc to be used just for storage.
But I'm just not sure what steps I need to follow to do this.
My OS is Win NT 4.0 w/service pack 6 (yeah yeah I know.. why am I running that? it's my work pc and I can't change the OS so there :) )
Any help is greatly appreciated.

I wouldn't add it to your current setup if its stable..could possibly(if existing hd is smaller) clone/upsize to the 20GB depending on manufacturer and the manufacturer's utlilities..then slave the existing drive..

Not sure what you mean by clone/upsize?

after running manufacturer's utlilities for drive fitness/etc. on the 20GB you can using same aforementioned utilities to image your existing 13.5 onto the 20 and once jumpered correctly use the 20 as your main boot drive and the 13.5 as your backup failsafe drive(I keep a 30GB in a separate box for my current setup loaded with basic getgoing stuff..)
