adding a access point to wireless network

I have recently finished building my home office. All my networking items are in there. It is built onto one end of the house with cat5 cabling running to each room. I have Verizon DSL with their new model 7500 modem/wireless router.

The problem i have is this. Signal strength in the far end of the house is low to none. How can I set up a access point so that when walking around the house you don't loose signal? (laptop or whatever switches from AP to Wireless Router automatically). As I said, I have cat5 cabling run through the house.

Thanks

Bill

Wow this forum gets no traffic... You can set the SSID and security to the same for both routers (different channels) but I don't think you can achieve a seamless handoff unless you have industrial APs.

you can configure the 2 routers (or router and AP) in WDS mode , the handoff should be seamless.

How do you set the westell 7500 router from Verizon into WDS mode?

And would they both run on the same channel and use the same SSID?

WDS is a None standard feature and when used the two communicating Routers need to support it.

I doubt that the Verizon Gizmo does.

Achieving seamless roaming with entry level wireless is big maybe.

Usually same SSID and different channels yields the same result, it takes less than a minute to try same channel, or different channels.

I do not roam in a middle of download, otherwise let problem with seamless Wireless be the only thing in life that bother you and you are a lucky man. ;)

so, if i go down to walamrt and buy a LINKSYS WAP54G AP and put the same SSID and security on it but use channel 6 insteadof channel 1, the laptop should switch from router to AP without any intervention by the user depending on where in the house you are.

Am I correct in assuming this?

Not doable with Verizon router. just live with the half minute transfer

OP's latest post: yes, no intervention, but it breaks the connection for a while. Might be cheaper to buy a router in this case and config it into AP mode. Cisco >>> Linksys
