... but holy crapola its a nice game.
Its the ultimate game of RISK.
My ONLY gripe is that they dont allow you to le the CPU resolve the battles AND allow you to watch. I've gotten to the point were Im more interested in the strategy in the game and I autoresolve the battles 99% of the time, but I'd still love to watch them.

All in all an AMAZING game, sad it took me this long to install it.

Great thing is, when you win with the Romans, you can play as other nations. I didn't autoresolve battles, with Germania, until I owned 90% of the world because I was almost always outnumbered since I was expanding so quickly. That's a lot of battles.

Definitely in my top 5 of all time games.

I like the battles, but I enjoy the strategy portion more so I simply skip past the painfully obvious battles (which in my current state is most of the battles I face).

Spain falls tonight under the hooves of my horsemen.

Restart it on Hard/Hard and the battles aren't quite so painfully obvious. ;)

yes turn based
sadly I wasnt able to conquer all of Spain last night. Boss-man in Rome told me to go blockade some Brittania's port so then all hell broke lose in the north. Needless to say, I ran those limey's off the mainland and have them pinned down in their own docks :)

It's both turn-based and real time. There's a large map and you move your armies, spies, and diplomats around in turned-based style. This is how you utilize diplomacy, subterfuge, and move your armies.

When you siege, or get sieged, or clash with another army on the big turn-based map, then you go to a real time battle.

The most remarkable thing about the real time is that you can have thousands of units on the screen at the same time and they are all rendered beautifully and move convincingly. Terrain also plays a huge factor. The terrain on the large map carries over to the battle maps. So if you camp out on the banks of a river, the enemy will need to cross the bridge during the engagement and will be easy to blockade. If you want to be on the high ground, just have your back facing the foot of a mountain range.

Rotttie- actualy, its better that too. The real-time battles can be paused, and you can look around the map, unlike most RTS games I've played. I found RTS games to be too stressful and therefore not fun becasue of that lack. Call me perfectionist ;).

The game is so well done that I am willing to rationalize/overlook the mistakes: Naval battles must be auto-determined; It is almost impossible to sink naval units; (PC bug) naval units can get trapped on a shoreline, and you cannot disband them- causing trouble like unintended territory trespassing/war; Auxilary armies (or any CPU controlled units) cannot be stopped, and usualy gung-ho into the middle of the enemy, negating any strategic element you may have :roll: ;

Anyway, a great game that gets the sound right for a long play game as well.
