Added RAM fails bootup?

Hey... I just upped from 256 MB to 512 MB of Crucial PC133 SDRAM. However, when I installed my new RAM properly, Windows XP won't boot up properly.

When I install the RAM and then boot, I get an error message when the striped line is about a 1/3 of the way loaded. It says the file "system32\ntfs.sys is corrupt or missing" or something like that. It tells me to run the Windows setup CD and click "Repair," so I try that. While trying to load up the setup CD, it says "Error loading. Error code 7. Setup cannot be run" after about 30 seconds of loading. I removed the new RAM, and it booted up fine. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Did you try to take out the original memory and put in the new one? If the new one only doesn't work then it's the new memory.

edit: I had the same problem before when I used to use Win 98 and it was because the memory was not compatible....

Well, they are the same exact thing I ordered from Crucial the first time, and the site had me pick my motherboard before choosing that RAM. It is almost identical, except this new stuff is aboutan 1/8th of an inch shorter, i.e. it sticks out just a tiny bit less than my old stuff. My old stuff is 6 months old, so maybe it's just smaller size from technology, but as far as I know, it's right.

return everything to non overclocked specs. also, these memory modules, one being shorter?! sounds weird. I would contact Crucial because they will be able to help you due to their 'system compatibility guarentee' thing.

good luck

Here's the breakdown. I think I have bad RAM in the end. Please confirm. I'll call Crucial now. I set everything to orig.

Old in slot 1, new in 2: Lockup, corrupt ntfs.sys.
Old in slot 1, new in 3: Boots up, recognizes new RAM, but I get tons of critical errors in everything I start, eventually auto restarts in middle of working.
New in 1. No old. Beeps twice on bootup, message "BIOS ROM Checksum error."

Thanks for confirmation here.

With the price of rams so low and so was the quality of most. It's definitely a bad ram. RMA it!
