Added gratuity...

The Racquet Club in Memphis adds sixteen percent gratuity to your bill. On the menu however, it states that you may increase or decrease due to quality of service.

How would one go about doing this without coming across as rude of lacking savoir-faire?

You don't need to justify giving a bad tip for bad service. If you do it, they'll probably figure out why.

This is a very exclusive club and gossip will surely ensue if less gratuity is left for no specific reason.

So, I just leave less than the bill total or do I need to contact a manager?

You adjust the tip manually on the receipt.

You have no control over how people will view your action, so don't worry about coming across rude or whether they might gossip. If that intimidates you, leave the pre-calculated tip alone.

You will not be able to do it without looking like a cheep bastard. What do you want to lower it to? 10%? On a $50 meal that is only $3. It is money well spent if you plan on ever eating there again. What about the service makes you want to give less then 16%?

10% of $50 is 5, not 3.

15% is standard for a tip unles you got incredibly piss, poor service. And if that's the case, you shoudl want to let a manager know so they can talk to the server to get them some training. Not sure what the problem is...

i believe he meant the difference between 10% and 16% of a $50 meal

I don't care where it is, anywhere that has waitstaff needs to know that bad service will equal a bad or non-existent tip. Most of the time it's not a problem, I'm pretty easy going and it's hard to annoy me. But if I go somewhere and the waiter/waitress completely ignores me, doesn't check back for refills, takes forever getting our meals, stuff like that, then I simply won't leave a tip. She drops off the bill, I'll put whatever cash on the table, and walk out without another word. If she wants to chase me into the parking lot and say that I shortchanged her, I'd be more than happy to go back inside and let the entire restaurant know what a sh1tty waitress she is.
