New Free Antivirus

I came across this - seems to be a popular download now at snapfiles.com. It is a new freeware antivirus suite. . . Must be lightweight - the download is only 4 megs.

I have not tried it - it is purely FYI. . .

Hey guys, you might want to give this one a 'serious' look. It uses the kaspersky engine. I finally downloaded it and tested it other day.

It is not a resident scanner. It is simply a scan on demand scanner which makes it perfect for a 2nd scanner.

It is not 'newbie friendly'. Unless I did somthing, wrong, as far as I can tell you simply unzip it to a folder. You then have to doubleclick a .com file to start the scanner.

It is a configurable from there.

To update it you have to double click a file called kabupd.exe.

A dos box opens and it connects to kaspersky and downloads the latest definitions.

i disagree, sygate, keiro, and antivir are superior to most of the non freeware programs i have used.

Be aware that these newer versions do not clean an infection. Instead, it returns a prompt suggesting that you purchase the full product. Previous edition of this freebie did not actually repair the file either. Instead, it just renamed it *.mwt. Anyway, if you just want a run a relatively slow and free scanner, there is nothing wrong with it. Just do not expect it to fix anything.

I agree with what everyone is saying. I use antivir myself - full-time. But what we have here is an excellent 'backup' scanner as Anti-vir or any other virus program is not going to catch all things at all times. I keep antivir running, and I do a full scan with this scanner once a week to 'double-check'. It is not a resident scanner so I don't have to worry about conflicts from two AV's on the same system as some people have.

Being the geek I am, if this program reports to me I have a virus - I'm going to look up manual removal instructions anyhow, or use a plethora of freely available removal tools - or back up and reformat (depending on the severity).

As I think I said in the OP - this is not a newbie friendly thing. You have to run a .com file to start it. Most ppl don't even know what a .com file is. You have to double click another program that opens a dosbox to update it.

If you know what you are doing, don't have the cash or inclination to use a product without a license, and you want the benefit of having one of the best AV's engine double check your resident full time scanner periodically - then this is a great deal for now - operative word being free.
