Add/Remove Programs Cant Judge Size of Some Programs?

Hi

I am having trouble with the add/remove programs feature in Windows 7. For some reason it has trouble estimating the size of some of my programs, especially games.

Here is a screenshot:

As you can see, both Company of Heroes and Battlefield Bad Company 2 are not showing their sizes. What can I do for Windows to recognize how many gigs those programs are?

There's absolutely nothing you can do. Applications have to include a manifest with the installer for the size feature to work - the games you listed don't have support for that feature built in to their installers.

Oh OK. Wouldnt a manifest be considered an important thing to code for? Neither Company of Heroes or Bad Company 2 are low budget games... Thanks though

I would consider it one of the many minor details that get missed because MS made them optional even though they should've have.

IF you really need the total size of files in a folder, use Explorer. Highlight the folder, right click and select PROPERTIES. It will tell you that.

Except that's the size of a folder, not a program.

You would if you were trying to free up space.

This. When I need to clear off space because I'm running out of room for school projects, I'd like to know what programs give me the most entertainment value (in my opinion) versus the space they take up. I may delete a bunch of tiny programs, or I may delete one big one. Either way I'd like to know how much space I'll get back by nuking it's 1's & 0's.

The term folder is used generically. You can check the size of any program sub-folder or file the same way. Most programs install in a folder - very few are self contained in one file. If so, that is seen the same way.

I prefer to use ZTreeWin for that - it is very precise with direct readouts.

I agree with heymrdj on this one. I dunno about you guys, but I find that not all of a program's files are in one spot. Games are a perfect example. Most of my games install to a 'program files' directory AND to a 'My Games' directory. A lot of mod/map and profile content go into the latter. Hence, its nice to know the total size of a game, not just the program files folder amount.

One of the most useful programs that I use on a daily basis.

When configured correctly it reads the whole content of the drive and then it is possible to show all the Files across all the folders (including hidden, and system files) sorted by Date, or Size, or Name, with Wild characters/filters needed.

That allows flexibility that none of the Explorer/Commander type of programs can provide.
