I'm in the process of building a new HTPC gaming rig.
For sound reproduction all I want is just a S/PDIF output to my sound processor or av receiver to the rest of my HT surround sound system and I will not use the PC speakers.
Would the integrated s/c on the mobo be good enough to do the trick?
or should I go out and get a pci sound card?

Yes, the onboard S/PDIF is good. There's really no difference between the digital signal put out by an integrated chip vs. a discrete card.

Unless you start doing audio production and/or need ultra low latency there's zero difference between using onboard Realtek sound vs. some expensive discrete or external solution.
