Add GPS to Chevy Sonic

my Dad misses his GPS apparently GPS is only available thru either on star for $35 a month or a smart phone app. I find both these options BS, I don’t want to be unlimited tech support for my Dad with a new phone or tablet.
What kind of install options are there to add a more traditional GPS in this car. He has the color screen in his dash, I saw this but I’m concerned about it’s quality

Any suggestions?

Like, a Garmin?

Otherwise, it seems like you've covered your other options.

I don't know how old your dad is, but IMHO if he's on-the-ball enough to drive, he'll probably get used to a smartphone/GPS after only a relatively short period of adjustment. (Doesn't the Sonic have Android Auto?)

You've said it yourself, you either pay $35 per month to use the screen already in the car, or you find your own screen.

Well, his link was to a company that sells some kind of retrofit kit to use the built in screen. But that's way more expensive than a smartphone, especially since it seems to require other components as well. And I doubt installation is super-easy.
