Add another 4GB of Ram? $80

If you're running a 32-bit OS, it would not be worth adding another 4GB's.
If you're running a 64-bit OS, you may see a bigger punch for your $80 by installing a good SSD.
If you're running a 64-bit OS, it still may not be worth adding an extra 4GB's depending on the machine usage.

x64 os
with page file enabled. 4gb is plenty. get ssd instead.
with a 16mb page file. 8gb is needed.

sc2 would crashing with only 4gb n 16mb page.
sc2 runs fine with 8gb n 16mb page.

bf4 uses 4.8gb to 5.1gb w/ 16mb page.

That can't be true?

i thought so too. originally build was 4gb. was not enough. so now 8gb.

sc2 is repeatable and verifiable. it would eventually crash with 4gb and 16mb page file (do note this is essentially no page file).

bf4 is repeatable and verifiable. do keep in mind this is allocated ram usage w/ essential no page file.

Isn't that mobo only SATA2/3Gbs?

If so an SSD would totally saturate that. SSD really shows its speed when on a SATA3/6gbs. It would still be an improvement, but it would be like putting a turbo on lawnmower verses getting a Subaru STi.

IMHO it is time to upgrade the mobo, cpu, ram, and get an SSD. Those Core2Ds are getting long in the the tooth. I am on one right now (work PC) with 6GBs of RAM and I hate EVERY second of it....slow as a dog. Takes forever to boot up and even longer to open Word or Excel.

The other day I built a box w/an I3, 8GB Ram, 180GB Samsung 840 SSD for my father...and even his oldass says he is way more productive (over his old C2D) and loves being able to get into windows/internet/use MS Office in 8 seconds.

Plus, while older RAM is expensive, you may be able to get a deal on ebay.

Thanks for the replies so far guys!

I currently am running Vista Home Premium - 64 bit

I currently have BF3 on my computer [ origin ... blah ] and definitely could use the extra ram it seems...?
I also am a rampent tab & window horder when it comes to browsing... It's typical to have 8 windows open, each with around .. 15 tabs open...? Vids in quite a few of those seem to bog things down [ youtube is especially finicky at times ]

The reason I haven't installed a SSD is because Vista = no trim....?

I actually have a SAMSUNG 840 Series MZ-7TD250BW 2.5" 250GB but thought I'd wait until I made a new build to use it as my 10K HDD seems to keep things hopping along pretty quick...?

Not only RAM, that Core 2 dual core will be slowing you down. If you want a massive speed boost I'd do a full rebuild with a 4570 minimum + 16GB RAM.

escrow, I do plan on doing a full rebuild. ( hence the comment that I have a SSD awaiting the new build )

Just was wondering what you all thought about putting ~80 or less towards an extra 4 gigs of ram.

Get that drive in there, man! I think 4GB for $80 would be a waste of money myself. People tend to overestimate the amount of RAM they need these days.

OP, how far out is your new build? As far as RAM... if you are over a year out, based on your declared use, add some more ram as long as it's is affordable to you.

As far as putting the new SSD in your current system, Samsung has a fairly competent toolbox... you are able to manually run TRIM on your drive, Vista not withstanding. I have an 840Pro on my daughter's old AMD XP laptop... it made a world of difference. I say install that drive... I think you would be surprised with the 'upgrade' in performance.

Dude, that's nothing. I've got hundreds. 😛

Anyway, get a SSD. I have an old system with high memory pressure (because it's a laptop with DDR2), and yes, it does page-thrash, but that's the beauty of a SSD--pagefile thrashing isn't nearly so bad. So if you're going a bit over, like say, a 5GB commit, you'll be fine and will probably be better off with a SSD for that $80. Now, if you go over by a lot, then you'll want extra memory instead, but with DDR2 prices being what they are (and seriously, consider getting them used on eBay instead; that's what I do for my DDR2 systems), it may make more sense to hold off on the RAM until you upgrade the entire system to a more modern DDR3 rig.

Core2Duo?? I say hold onto your money and save up for a new i3 or i5 combo, including 8GB of affordable DDR3.

Yes and no... the OP can drop in an SSD and realize performance gains now... and then take the SSD to the new system when it's built. Win/win!
